Travelling with children between Barcelona and the South of France

A family trip across the border is easy with a little preparation: the right seat for each child, an ID document for everyone and enough room for the buggy. Here is what the rules say on each side of the border and how we organise a family transfer.

Child seats

What the law says on each side of the border

In Spain, children up to 135 cm tall must travel in an approved child restraint suited to their height and weight. In France, the Highway Code requires an approved child restraint for every child under 10. On a cross-border trip, the practical rule is simple: add a seat for any child under 135 cm, and tell us the age and height of each child so we bring the right one.

Child seats are available on request, for a small supplement. Add them when you book: we cannot guarantee a seat requested at the last minute.

Door-to-door comparison

Train, bus, own car or private driver: the real numbers for your group

Choose where you start, where you are going and how many of you are travelling. The private transfer price comes live from our booking engine; train, bus and tolls come from published fares, with their date. You decide.

The private transfer is priced for the whole vehicle; we divide it by the number of travellers so you can compare.

Sources (checked 27-10-2026): train times and fares from Barcelona-Sants (kombo.co, Trainline), FlixBus routes, 2026 Vinci Autoroutes/ASF rates (class 1). Driving times: OSRM, without traffic. Indicative: check with each operator.

Documents

ID for every child, and sometimes a travel authorisation

France has notified checks at its internal borders, so every passenger, babies included, needs a valid ID card or passport. Keep the documents at hand rather than in the boot.

A child who lives in France and travels abroad without a parent holding parental authority needs a travel authorisation (AST, Cerfa form 15646) signed by a parent, with a copy of that parent’s ID. Spain has a similar permission for Spanish minors travelling abroad without their parents, issued by the National Police or the Guardia Civil. Check the official rules if this applies to you.

On the road

Practical tips for a family transfer

  • Tell us how many suitcases, buggies and cots you have: we choose a vehicle with room for everything.
  • A short break on the way is always possible; ask the driver.
  • Bring water, snacks and something to keep the children busy on the motorway.
  • After a flight, the 60 minutes of free waiting from landing give you time for nappies and baggage reclaim.
  • The price is per vehicle, not per person: children do not add to it, apart from child seats.
