Train, bus or private transfer: getting from Barcelona to France

There is no single right answer for everyone. Trains and buses are often the most economical choice for a solo traveller with light luggage. A private transfer wins as soon as there are children, suitcases, a late flight or several passengers. Here is how to choose.

A QuickPickups service

The train

Fast station to station, less handy from the airport

Trains link Barcelona-Sants station with the South of France, some direct and others with a change depending on where you are going. Station to station, it is quick and comfortable. Timetables, journey times and fares vary with the day and how early you buy, so check them directly with the rail operators.

The tricky part is often before and after the train. From El Prat airport you first have to reach Sants by suburban train or bus, then wait for your departure. Girona airport has no station at all. And at the other end, you still have to get from the station to your address.

Door-to-door comparison

Train, bus, own car or private driver: the real numbers for your group

Choose where you start, where you are going and how many of you are travelling. The private transfer price comes live from our booking engine; train, bus and tolls come from published fares, with their date. You decide.

The private transfer is priced for the whole vehicle; we divide it by the number of travellers so you can compare.

Sources (checked 27-10-2026): train times and fares from Barcelona-Sants (kombo.co, Trainline), FlixBus routes, 2026 Vinci Autoroutes/ASF rates (class 1). Driving times: OSRM, without traffic. Indicative: check with each operator.

The bus

Economical, but long and on fixed timetables

International coach lines connect Barcelona with Perpignan, Narbonne, Montpellier and Toulouse. It is usually the most economical option, with longer journey times than the train and departures from specific bus stations. Luggage allowances are limited and night connections are rare.

For a student or a solo traveller with no fixed schedule, it is a perfectly good choice. For a family with a buggy and four suitcases, much less so.

The private transfer

Door to door, on your schedule, priced per vehicle

A private transfer starts wherever you are, airport, port, hotel or station, and stops outside your address in France. The price is fixed per vehicle, tolls included, for up to 22 passengers: on your own it costs more than the train; for four or six people, the gap narrows considerably.

There are no connections and no platforms to find. We track your flight, your driver waits with a name sign and your luggage stays in the same boot until you arrive.

Who it suits

Which option is right for you

Train

Solo or couple, travelling light

You leave from central Barcelona in the daytime and your destination is close to a station.

Bus

Tight budget, flexible schedule

You travel with little luggage and journey time matters less than price.

Private transfer

Families, groups, luggage

There are several of you, with children or suitcases, you land late or your address is far from a station.

Private transfer

Arriving by air

Especially at Girona, which has no station, or at El Prat in the evening, when chaining trains and connections gets long.

Simple maths

Compare like with like

To compare fairly, add up every ticket for your group, the trip from the airport to the station, the trip from the arrival station to your address, and the time lost in connections. Set that against our per-vehicle price, which covers the whole journey. Check it in the widget: it is free and comes with no obligation.

And remember what the price includes: tolls, meet and greet, flight tracking, free waiting time and free cancellation up to 24 hours before pick-up. The figure you see is the figure you pay.

Included in your fixed price

  • Fixed price per vehicle, no meter, no surprises
  • Tolls and parking included
  • Free waiting: 60 min at the airport, 30 min at the cruise port and Sants station, 15 min at any other address
  • Real-time flight tracking
  • Meet & greet: driver with a name sign at arrivals
  • Luggage help, no card surcharge

Frequently asked questions

Is the train cheaper than a private transfer?

For one person, usually yes. With several passengers, the per-vehicle price of a transfer is shared and the gap narrows. Compare the operators’ official fares with our price.

Can I take a train straight from Barcelona airport to France?

A suburban train links the airport with the city, but trains to France leave from Barcelona-Sants, so you need to change.

Is there a train at Girona airport?

No. You need a bus to Girona city before you can take a train.

Where can I find train timetables?

On the official websites of the Spanish and French rail operators, linked on this page.

Is a private transfer worth it for one person?

Yes, if you land late, have a lot of luggage or are going to an address far from a station. Otherwise, the train may be enough.

What does your price include?

The door-to-door ride, tolls, meet and greet with a name sign, flight tracking and free waiting time. Child seats are optional extras.
